Found this at mugglenet in a column called the North Tower the title of the column is beyond the veil:
I must admit that I had taken Sirius off the "Book 5 death list" for this precise reason. Surely JKR wasn't going to kill off Sirius when Harry had already lost both his parents. I, too, was very, very sad when I realized that he was dead. I can see now why she did it, though: Harry needs to experience Love in all its forms to be able to vanquish Voldemort in the end. He needs to know the force which is "more wonderful and more terrible" than everything else (and I believe that this force is Love) in all aspects. He misses his parents but hasn't really felt the sorrow of their deaths. He saw Cedric die, but that wasn't a person he truly loved. He has now experienced the strongest and most terrible of all feelings: to watch a loved one die. The death of Sirius is in a way the logical progression of the previous deaths in Harry's life. His parents' death was a "half" experience (love), Cedric's death too (loss). Sirius' death puts the two parts together (love + loss), making Harry really understand the mixed wonderfulness and terribleness of Love. (Plus, it saved him from Voldemort possessing him.)
I thought it was very interesting and makes a lot of sense!

That does make a lot of sense. Lol it kinda bugs me when some people can get the words out like how they are in my head, and make it sound so good, but I make it sound completely messed up. Lol that reminds me, yesterday I tried to say something, I don't remember what, now, but when I actually said it, it came out as a complete sentence made up of words that I'd mangled so badly that they weren't even remotely the same words. The person I was talking to just kinda stared at me awhile before I calmed down and said it right. Anyhoozles, I don't get the part at the bottom where it says that it saved Harry from being possessed by Voldy. I thought he did get possessed by him.

That may as well be true....But there is just one thing that stops that from happening. Why would j,k cry if someone dident really die??? JKR cried because she is a woman and she is emotional. I hope i do not offend any women. My girlfriend crys over everything...it is unbelievable. Sorry if I did offend any one.

Yes, but then love allowed him to throw off the posession. That bit in the article was just slightly badly worded.
On the ghost thing, I don't think Sirius had the chance to become a ghost. Ghosts are 'neither here nor ther', right? Well, Sirius went directly from 'here' (living) to 'there' (dead), without the usual process of dying in between.

He didn't become a ghost becaues he wasn't afraid of death and what lay beyond life for him.

i dont know if this has been mentioned before but for a while i thought that maybe the sirius that fell throught the veil was not actually sirius. Now hear me out here, i haven't quite convinced myself yet because JK said a significant character died but once again how do we know if she was trying to trick us again Any way back to my story if you read carefully harry never sees siris up close. He only ever sees him from a distance, he see his 'shagy black hair' No one ever says his name as sirius black Belatrix calls him cousin and Black, Lupin never calls him sirius. Do you follow me We are not certain that Regulas died. Sirius seems a bit shaky when he was telling harry about his brother, he didn't seem to know the whole story. For all we know Regulas joined the order and was the one who fell through the veil. I know it is far-fetched but is an idea/theory

I dont know about the name thing but i think JK only made Harry see Sirius from the back and far away show he was out of harrys reach and there was nothing he could do to help him but you never know with jk

I didn't notice that no-one used Sirius' name during the battle, but they certainly did use his name afterwards.
