Chapter 8 Seeing is Believing
"Harry, Lily, calm down. I simply think there will be many who will not believe it is you-" started Dumbledore, placatingly.
"And I am one of them!!" burst out McGonagall, standing up, "Albus it simply can’t be!! You know that!! I refuse to believe it and I will not believe it until I have some form of truth!!"
Dumbledore looked at her, then said calmly to Hagrid, "Hagrid, would you mind fetching Severus? Tell him to bring his strongest truth potion he has."
Hagrid, who had been crying onto tiny Professor Flitwick’s shoulder, looked up, nodded and vacated the room.
"Lily, would you permit us to give you Veritaserum? I believe it is you, but there are some people," he shot a sharp glance at Professor Mcgonagall, "Who find it harder to believe even if they desperately want to."
"Of course Albus, if it will mean people will believe me then I do not mind at all," said Lily, squeezing Harry’s hand.
Inside his head, Harry was battling with his own emotions. Half of him wanted to cry and beg his mother never to leave him. The other, slightly bitter part of him wanted to rage at her for leaving him for so long. Couldn’t she have broken the curse a lot quicker than she did?!
Suddenly Hagrid appeared, followed by a slightly irritable looking Snape.
"Headmaster, I am very busy trying to prepare my next lessons, could this-," he broke off, having caught sight of Lily, "Lily!! How?!"
"Hello Severus, its your dear Mudblood friend," Lily said, her voice sharply sarcastic.
Snape looked taken aback, "Lily, I was 15-"
Dumbledore cut him off, "Severus, the truth potion?"
"Oh, yes, of course, here," Snape handed Dumbledore a small bottle of clear liquid.
"Thank you. Lily, if you would-"
"Of course." Lily took the bottle from Dumbledore, brought it to her lips and drained half of it. Shuddering slightly, she placed the bottle on the desk and leant back in her seat slightly. Everyone watched her. After a few moments her expression became blank and her green eyes glazed over.
Dumbledore leaned forward in his seat, cleared hi throat slightly and said, "What is you full name?"
"Lily Potter"
"And what is your maiden name?"
"Lily Evans."
"What is your date of birth?"
"25th May, 1962"
Dumbledore paused and glanced at McGonagall, who had sunk back into her chair, sobbing slightly.
"Where do you live?"
"Godric’s Hollow, Suffolk"
"Whom did you marry?"
"James Potter"
"Who are your last remaining family?"
"Harry Potter and Petunia Dursley."
"Where have you been the last 15 years?"
"I do not know the place. I was placed under the Imperius Curse by a Death Eater."
The potion seemed to be wearing off, her eyes were beginning to gleam again, her mouth smiling slightly.
"How did I do?"
"Very well Mum," said Harry, resting his head on her shoulder.
"Did I?" she said excitably to the rest of the room.
No one answered. They were all speechless. Suddenly, McGonagall did something Harry had never seen her do before, she leapt to her feet, grabbed Lily and hugged her. Lily looked shocked but pleased. Finally, after McGonagall released her, she turned to Dumbledore and said,
"So, where do we go from here?"
"Well, the Ministry need to be alerted. And, I suppose the newspapers also. And I daresay Remus Lupin would like to know." Said Dumbledore, his eye’s twinkling.
"Remus!! Call him now!!" exclaimed Lily.
"Yes, I will certainly do that, would you and Harry please wait outside. I will contact Remus via Floo Powder but I think he should be informed of the facts before he meets you." Said Dumbledore.
"Okay, anything, just get him here!"
Lily took Harry’s hand and led him to the office door. They went through it and stood outside where they stood in silence for a few moments.
"Mum?" said Harry suddenly.
"Yes?"
"Nothing, I just love saying that." He said, looking at his feet and smiling slightly.
Lily put her arm around his shoulder and held him. They stood like that all the time they listened to the happenings in the office.
They heard people talking very fast.
A muffled cry.
Footsteps towards the door.
It flew open, revealing Remus Lupin. He stood, looking petrified for a few moments, before suddenly grabbing Lily and hugging her tight. His shoulders shook as he cried into her shoulder. She held him.
Finally, she pulled away and held him at arm’s length, examining him like a mother would do, then said, "Your looking a bit peaky Moony, full moon by any chance?"
He smiled weakly and put his hand to his face, wiping away the tears.
"I- I can’t believe this, it’s the thing I hoped for since you died. I’ve imagined it, one of you coming back, and I’ve always known exactly what to say. But now it happens, and I can’t say anything!" he said quietly.
"You don’t need to say anything, you being here for Harry and I is enough."
They hugged again and went back into the office. Dumbledore was smiling broadly.
"Right, well Minerva and have a lot of people to make contact with. I think its time Harry went to bed. Lily, we will set you up a room in the castle," he said.
Harry opened his mouth to protest but Lily silenced him with a hug. As she held him she said loudly, "Its alright Harry, you go to bed, I’ll be here in the morning," she lowered her voice and whispered directly in his ear, "I’ll find you."
They broke apart and Harry left the office.
"Lily, Professor Flitwick will show you to your room."
Lily followed the tiny Professor from the room and along the corridor to an office. He stood at the door and pointed his wand at it, a burst of violet sparks flew from it. Lily saw the room rearranging itself through the mottled glass of the door. She thanked him and went inside. There was a fluffy, warm looking bed in the centre of the room. She sat on it but she had no intention of going to sleep. Once she was sure Flitwick was gone, she ran from the office to the Gryffindor Tower. When she got to the portrait of the Fat Lady however, there was a slight hitch:
"Password?"
"Er.."
"No password, no entry."
"Oh for christ’s sake, I’m Lily Potter, let me in the bloody tower!"
"Lily Potter?!" The portrait flew forwards in shock, Lily seized her chance and threw herself through the portrait hole.
Running through the familiar common room, she went up the stairs that she knew led to the boy’s dormitory and quickly found the 6th year boys room. Slowly she opened the door and crept inside. Most of the boys were asleep except from one who was sat up in bed, Harry.
He turned and saw her, opened his mouth to cry out but she put her fingers to her lips. He went silent. She hurried to his side and sat down next to him.
"Go to sleep baby, I’m never going to leave you again," she whispered. He put his head on the pillows and she reached out and took off his glasses, placing them on the bedside table. She stroked his hair, and he closed his eyes. They stayed like that for hours, until Harry fell asleep. It was only then that Lily was left alone with her thoughts. As she watched him sleep, she realised how much he looked like James, she watched as his chest rose and fell, his face peaceful. The thought of James bought tears to her eyes, she realised with a jolt that she had never once cried for him. Before she knew it she was crying as though she’d never stop, trying desperately to muffle her sobs in the bedclothes. As she cried, she waited for James’ voice to sound in her head, soothing the horrible pain she felt.
But it didn’t.
