Once again with the upbringing not being an excuse!
I also don't know if Sirius is all that good of an example since he was just as bad as James was. I know that you are talking about his mother hating Mudbloods but I still think that, if there are no excuses for being nasty, than Sirius and James picking on Snape just because they were bored is equally bad and inexcusable. If it does depend on the person then Snape could react to his upbringing in a different way than Sirius. Especially, if Snape was abused in some fashion. Ricky Fitts in "American Beauty" snapped one day because of his Father's treatment of him.
I kind of have another theory with the whole animosity thing between James and Snape. It also involves their family background but I'm not going to say it. For the record it's not rude. I just know that JKR didn't want anybody to spoil her story and I'm not in a hurry of doing that.
Maybe sometime in the future I'll join. Could happen.

Snape IS my favorite character, but be realistic (about a fantasy book, lol, how ironic): Harry has thousands and thousands of pictures of his parents, smiling and happy. Lily doesn't look very forced or indebted to me. And come on, Lily is intelligent, she wouldn't marry a man just because he saved someone's life, no matter who. That's absurd.
And really, there's no reason at all to even think Lily liked Snape; she was just a kind person. I think she liked James, she was just sick of him acting like he owned everything. Her smile, if we're honest, shows that she thought James was funny, but didn't want him behaving that way.
What James did was something any egotistical teenage boy with a wand would do. And there's a lot of them. What Snape said was a product of a racist, hate-filled mind. Are you forgetting which one became a Death Eater? Sure I believe Lily could have forgiven both of them. But it seems to me Snape wouldn't have stopped after that, as he didn't really care for her that much.
And yes, Snape is my favorite character; his psychological conflicts are what make him such an interesting, complex, and realistic character. However, they are also the very things that make it so hard for him to show affection towards someone.

And if you do, be sure to before July 15, we're moving then.

I seem to get into little arguments wherever I go. Oh well.
Elysium I understand what you are saying. I really do. I still think that there was something between Snape and Lily though.
I think we know so little about the past that it is useless to know what truly happened. I put my faith in Dumbledore however and his trust of Snape. Snape is my fave character because of all that he is. If he turned bad I'd love him.
Nothing anyone could say would make me not like Snape/Lily and believe that Snape did have his reasons, whether it's the way that he was raised or just because he was in so much pain and humiliation he needed to hurt someone. Maybe it was just plain pride. I don't agree with him saying it but I can try to put myself in his shoes and open my heart and mind enough to see it from his point of view. I think Snape is a deeper character than you are giving him credit for.
And I still can't understand why you say that what James did is what any teenage boy would do but what Snape did was wrong. And yes Snape did become a Death Eater but you don't mention that he redeemed himself and is now working for Dumbledore.
I'm afraid that I upset you in some way. I'm sorry.

Hey i am so for the Lily/Snape thing. so let's all jump on the band wagon and agree that no belle wasn't playing hard to get with gaston. She hated him, believ me i would know i know the whole beauty and the beast movie off by heart. Literally. I like the idea of James saving Severus. Oh the dramatic irony of these books. LOL. Any who, Lily and Snape are so compatable. Like olaflavor is saying it's all about hypothesising and looking at the facts, just like the whole Sirius's child thing. Ha! I would love to here about a Snape and Lily thing. He's so funny, I love Snape. Besides Lily as we all know wasn't a slut so therefore she wouldn't play hard to get with James. I think it's pretty obvious that she didn't like James. She was so totally into Snape. Ooo what abpout Sirius did he have a big detailed love life like the whole Snape/Lily/James love triangle?

rofl...upset me?? Don't ever worry about that, I don't take differences of opinion personally. I rather enjoy a good debate, ask meatnmilk, lol.
The thing is, I just see the Lily/Snape thingy as sooo played out and cliche...

ya i think that too there is no way there wasw any romance except for snape liking her I think if Snape liked anyone it was Narcissa. I don't know why, that's just the feeling I get.

we don't really know much about narcissa. snape seems to be the jealous type, so wouldn't he loathe Lucius for marrying her? And well lets face it why would he treat Draco so nicely if he were another man's son and not his. Unless of course you're suggesting snape was having an afffair with Narcissa, and that draco really is his son. But, JKR doesn't really seem to stir coals on secret affairs, so it's highly unlikely that draco is snape's son. I stand behind the other snape/lily supporters, snape/narcissa don't really click if you ask me.

No, I think maybe he loved Narcissa, and he doesn't know how to show love, so she married Lucius and that's why Snape hates Lucius, and turns against the DE's. Lucius is about 10 years older than him (his age in the Daily Prophet is that much older than Sev's as reported by JK) so I always thought, maybe Lucius was like a mentor to Snape, and got him into the DE's in the first place, but after Lucius betrayed him Snape hated him and turned spy. And maybe he just feels bad for Draco because he knows what it's like to have a bad father. Or, as someone else mentioned, if he loved Lily and protected him because of her, maybe he loved Narcissa and looks out for Draco because of her.

Lucius must be like at least ten years older than Narcissa then. Elysium, how do you know they're the same person?

IP addresses all match, except they use dial-up so the last few numbers always change.
