I take them as just fiction. Another idea that I don't believe is true, but is rather interesting.

Granted, but I still don't like them. I thought they were boring as well.

I think most the LOR movies were filmed in the South Island, so it's not so much inland, as across sea for me.
There are some magnificent mountains in the North Island, about 3 and half hours drive from where I live.
In Auckland itself we have the Waitakere Ranges (where they filmed much of the Xena and Hercules series), they are a rainforest range of mountains along the West Coast of Auckland....absolutely fantastic place, wild west coast beaches and spectacular native bush.
The Waitaks (as they are often called) are about 10 minutes drive from my house, downtown (Central city business district) is about 20 minutes drive away.

I remember watching Xena, I was a huge fan when I was about 9. Don't ask why, I have no idea. But back then for some reason I thought NZ was in Asia...

LOL, funny. My friend is from Greenland and people always ask her what it's like in Iceland. And I have this friend who is a German exchange student, and people always ask her " Do you speak a little German?". Makes me ashamed to be American. One guy asked her "What language do you speak in Germany?".

It gets worse... an American exchange student at my uni back in England found out that this other girl was Irish... looked very surprised, and said, "wow, you speak really good English! When did you learn it?"

Well then, I can blame my stupidity on being American then. Yay.

who mentioned stupidity? If we're gonna get technical, everything that's been mentioned is ignorance, not stupidity. But actually... yeah... no offence, anyone, but Americans do have a reputation for ignorance... I reckon it's cos the TV over there is so useless. There are no documentaries!!! Not good ones, anyway. And no real news. I'm sure I've got half of my random and pointless general knowledge from watching BBC documentaries... seriously, everything from the history of the Mongol empire to the development of flushing toilets to the genetic modification of tomatos.

When my friends were in California on their bandtrip some old people asked where they were from. When they told them they were from Iowa, one lady smiled knowingly and said, "Here we pronounce it Ohio." Oi!

^ that is so hilarious pantstheterrible.
I think a lot of the US tv producers underestimate their audience and 'dumb down' content needlessly. I interact with Americans (in real time) every week day (and occasionly on weekends), and not a one of them is substandard in intelligence (quite the opposite).

Yes, some Americans are very smart (like me ) But some are really dumb too. But I guess that goes for any country.

i think that interview w/ the vampire the book is 10 times better than the movie, but then i'm an anne rice fan
