It seems that I have been losing visitors to the demands of paranoid parents. To put it bluntly, that sucks. To try and fix the problem, I now offer my powers of persuasion to anyone who requests them. If you want instant gratification, you may start here:
I am committed to my visitors and their well-being. As there is no way to prove it, this is something about which my word will have to do. However, I suppose I can try to back it up.
My name is not Dienne Yales Herlsif. Most of the kids at this board follow my suit of refraining from using a real name. If I spot anyone with a real last name listed, I immediately modify the user profile to remove it and then contact that user about the dangers of sharing personal information on the Internet. I have many Mods that are instructed to inform me of people giving away information that could potentially be dangerous to give.
If profiles are spotted with locations as specific as hometown, I personally modify them. If topics come up that relate too closely to the specific residences of visitors, I end and remove the topic. If creeps start hanging around the board asking for information, I send a warning to that creep, and upon further violation ban the creep's IP address.
Conversations related to sexuality are very closely monitored, and I keep the boards as kid-friendly as possible while remaining an open forum. Any hint toward harassment of any kind is not tolerated, and I take note of which users on which IP addresses are making such hints. Though it has not been a problem thus far, any future occurence of illegal activity on this fourm will not be tolerated, and I will take down names, e-mail and IP address, and any other relevant information to give to authorities.
Besides my monitoring, there are multiple ways to contact my Mods and me with links all over the forum and the HPR Web site, as well as a 'Report' function for private messages, which I would otherwise be unable to see. If I could monitor the PM's then I would do that as well, and I am constantly keeping an eye out for a service that will host a more secure board for free.
I have been running HP Web sites with visitor interaction since 2000, and security and safety have always been top priorities. And now beside my own commitments, I have Proboards backing me up as well. I am quite aware of the dangers lurking out there, but the HPR message board is meant to be a safe place to interact with people of all ages, races, and locations. I am still awed by the variety of members at my forum and humbled by the numbers my statistics show. If interacting here could be harmful in any way, I may as well pack it up now and call it quits.
I won't of course. Because it's not. In fact, there have been posts that awe me further with how good they are for us. One of my favorites was on the old board, when a good group of us from different ages and backgrounds had a very long and intelligent debate about President George W. Bush... just an example. It also shows that we are not here to dull our minds over HP, though that may happen to a certain extent. We are normal people. We just have a very interesting hobby, and it's amazing how this simple hobby can bring people together. People have made friends on this board. I have made friends on this board.
In closing I would like to invite replies to this thread to include visitor testimonials. Please show the unbelievers that I do care about you: Share you story. Thank you.
